Exhaust pipe exhausted?

If you notice any of the problems listed opposite you should get your exhaust checked to find out if there is a problem and what action is needed.

The system also needs inspecting if there is any rust or corrosion on the exhaust pipe, or there are cracks, especially where the sections connect.

Faulty exhausts systems can also impact on the performance of the engine, resulting in slower acceleration and reduced fuel economy.

Rattling – could indicate loose brackets, which hold the exhaust system and heat shields in place

Hissing or popping – could be a sign that the back box or one of the pipes is leaking

Blue smoke – a possible fault in the engine, which is putting burnt oil into the exhaust system

White smoke – normal for cold engines, but it could indicate a leaking head gasket or a cracked engine block
